Kuppet resists reforms, says it violates rights.
The Kenyan Union of Post- Primary Education Teachers has resisted reforms by the presidential working party on education reforms.
Kuppet argues that, this proposals curtail the responsibilities of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The same will also disturb the employment rights of educators in Kenya.
Teachers welfare is key.
Kuppet National Chairman Omboko Milemba speaks in Nandi South during Unions Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Together with the Secretary General Akelo Misori they say that some proposals must stop because it’s against their rights.
Teachers welfare to be respected.
Milemba insists that, TSC has always had a mandate to employ and supervise within the education sector.
Therefore, the presidential working party’s plan to limit it’s authority will have a negative impact on teachers.
Consultations need to be done before implementing
He says, some recommendations must have a check before implements especially those to do with TSC.
He adds that, education reforms should gear towards a strong existance institutions rather than to undermine their functions.
Mr.Omboko further laments that, some proposals have been made without proper consultation from the management.
The proposals on board didn’t value the well being of the stakeholders regarding supervision of teachers.
He also says that, Kuppet won’t allow the roles of TSC to have a transfer to other government agencies.
Parliament Rejects Education Reforms.
The proposal that ,county commissioners and provisional directors should take over the role to supervise teachers is strongly opposed.
Misori says that, the salary increase of 7 and 9.5 per cent is a good thought, however it fails short of the teachers expectations.
Pay rise and promotions.
He adds that, talks between the government sector and the Teachers Service Commission about pay rise are still ongoing.
The teachers are demanding for 50 per cent salary increase together with promotion of teachers, he added.
Omboko wants teachers to push harder and government to reconsider the laws affecting institutional structures and obey them.
He finally says that, teachers welfare need to be at hand to ensure a conducive working environment for them.
